Pentoxifylline 400 mg tablets

What is pentoxifylline and what is it used for?

• Pentoxifylline is a drug that belongs to a class of drugs known as "blood modifiers".
• It is used to treat patients suffering from intermittent claudication (muscle pain that occurs with light exertion, usually during exercise and in the calf muscle).
• It works by improving symptoms and function but does not replace your definitive treatment, such as removing blocked arteries or surgical bypass.

Do not take pentoxifylline:

• If you have recently experienced a cerebral and/or retinal hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain or eye).
• If you have previously experienced intolerance to this drug or methylxanthines such as theophylline, caffeine, and theobromine.

Warnings and precautions:

• Stop taking the medicine immediately and talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you experience allergic reactions such as shortness of breath, skin rash, swelling of the face or neck, low blood pressure, and dizziness.
• Talk to your doctor if you experience signs of angina, low blood pressure, or irregular heartbeat such as palpitations, dizziness, fatigue, chest pain, and difficulty breathing.
• Be sure to tell your doctor if you are taking warfarin. Your doctor may recommend more frequent monitoring of certain blood tests (such as prothrombin time) to check for safety.
• Be sure to tell your doctor if you have ever experienced a risk of bleeding (such as an ulcer in your intestines or brain, bleeding in the eye, and recent surgery).
• Your doctor may recommend frequent monitoring with blood tests (such as hemoglobin and hematocrit) to check for bleeding.
• Talk to your doctor if you are taking blood pressure medication. Your doctor may recommend regular blood pressure monitoring and may adjust your medication dosage accordingly if necessary.

Possible side effects:

• Possible side effects include signs of an allergic reaction such as rash and itching, and signs of cardiovascular problems such as chest pain, palpitations, facial flushing, and irregular heartbeat.
• Common side effects include abdominal discomfort, bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, dizziness, headache, tremors, and blurred vision.

Other medications and pentoxifylline:

• Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines, including nonprescription medicines, prescription medicines, herbal supplements, vitamins, and supplements.
• If you are taking antiplatelet or anticoagulant medications (blood thinners such as warfarin).
• If you are taking medications containing theophylline.
• If you are taking blood pressure medications (such as nifedipine or captopril).

How to take pentoxifylline:

• Adults: The recommended dose for adults is one extended-release tablet (400 mg) by mouth three times a day.
• Children: The safety and effectiveness of this drug in children have not yet been established.
• Elderly patients: Your doctor may recommend monitoring kidney function and may adjust the dose accordingly.
• Take the tablet with food.
• Take the tablet with a full glass of water.
• Take the medicine exactly as prescribed by the doctor.
• The medication may take 2 to 4 weeks to start working. It is recommended to take this medication for at least 8 weeks.
• If you experience gastrointestinal and nervous system side effects, your doctor may reduce the dose to twice a day.
• If the symptoms persist even after reducing the dose, your doctor may recommend stopping the medication altogether.

How to store pentoxifylline:

• Keep the medicine out of reach of children and pets.
• Store the medicine at a temperature of 15 to 30 degrees Celsius.
• Do not use the medicine after the expiry date stated on the carton.
• Keep the medicine in its original packaging to protect it from moisture and light.
• Do not use damaged grains.
• Do not dispose of medicines in sewage or household waste.
